When did you start your business?
I launched my business in 2010 because I couldn’t find a product that I needed for my baby daughter – something to help her sleep when we were out with the pram and protect her from the elements – from that need, SnoozeShade was born. It’s now the world’s best-selling range of sun and sleep shades, which is amazing when I take a moment to think about it (which if I’m honest, I don’t do very much).
Who inspires you?
My mother is my biggest inspiration – she showed me when I was younger how strong women react to bad situations and gave me a belief that everything will be ok eventually and has supported me in my business since I started it.
What’s your top business tip for getting through the pandemic?
I started my business after the last big recession and the same tip applies then and now – keep an eye on your costs and stay as lean as you can for as long as you can. I run my global business from home which has enabled me to outsource all the major functions of the business and be able to invest in growing the business over the years.
How is your business adapting to change?
I think businesses should always be looking at ways to do things better (regardless of a pandemic) and that often means changing processes and analysing what is and isn’t working without emotion. In ten years, I have regularly reassessed how I do things and why I do them a certain way. I had a complete rebrand planned for this year which still went ahead, I just had to renegotiate longer payment terms when things tightened up for a while. Don’t be afraid of having open conversations with people in difficult times.
What are you looking forward to after the pandemic?
Going on holiday! I love nothing more than hitting a beach with a good book and my daughter and can’t wait until we can do that again.
