Almost half of new mums don’t receive a gift after welcoming a new baby

NEW MUMS are overlooked by friends and family following the birth of their child, new research has found.

The survey of 1,000 UK mothers, conducted by the UK’s leading independent online florist, Serenata Flowers, reveals that although 86% of mums say they received a gift for their little one after the birth, as many as 44% did not receive any gifts for themselves.

According to the data, the percentage of mums who did receive a gift for themselves but not for their baby was just 8%. In addition, 77% of mums say they did not receive a gift from their partner (commonly referred to as a ‘push present’) following the birth of their new arrival.

A further 2 in 3 of those polled (66%), say they did not receive a gift for themselves from family members and almost 3 in 4 (72%) were not gifted items to enjoy themselves from friends.

The data suggests that 26% of mums between the ages of 16-44 agree that after having their child, a thoughtful gift would have made them feel appreciated. In addition, 18% of this group also admit they would have liked more acknowledgement from friends and family following the birth of their child.

The research goes on to reveal that the younger generation of mums (those aged 16-24) have a greater need for acknowledgement following childbirth, as 19% of this group say they got tired of people cooing over their baby but not talking to them. Almost 1 in 4 within this group (23%) even go so far as to say that feeling overlooked following the birth of their child negatively affected their relationships with some of their friends.

According to the findings, the most common gifts that new mums receive are baby outfits (78%) followed by baby toys (64%) and sleepsuits (61%). The most common item gifted that mums can enjoy is flowers (45%), followed by bath products (41%) and confectionary (27%).

Interestingly, it seems those who do gift presents to mums are getting it right, as these top three most commonly gifted items were also found to be the gifts mums most desire following childbirth – flowers (30%), confectionary (29%), bath products (22%).

Completing the top five is beauty products (19%) and vouchers for salons such as a hair salon or nail bar (18%).

Lucia Polla, Marketing Manager at Serenata Flowers, comments:

“There’s nothing more exciting than visiting the new arrivals of close friends and family and it’s hard to resist spoiling the growing family with adorable miniature clothes and accessories. However, this research reminds that mums need treating too. A thoughtful gift, which isn’t baby related and is tailored to her – whether it be a thoughtful piece of jewellery, tickets for a spa or restaurant, or their favourite bunch of flowers – really goes a long way, at a time when they need to be looked after too”.
