1) When did you start your brand?
I started working on the concept of The Essential Bag Company in October 2014 when I was pregnant with my second child. I left my job as a lawyer and worked on getting the business ready for launch before my son arrived. The Essential Bag Company officially launched in February 2015.
2) Who inspires you?
Julie Deane of The Cambridge Satchel Company. She spoke at an event I attended and was inspirational. It is motivating to see how someone with little resources (£600 start up fund) and a huge amount of drive turned her concept into a hugely successful and internationally recognised brand. She is open about the mistakes she made along the way and shows that if you believe in yourself anything is possible.
3) What’s your top business tip?
It is better to get something done (albeit 90% perfect) than not get it done at all. Many of us have perfectionist tendencies, which as useful as they are, they can also inhibit progress. I found this mantra useful in the run up to launch – if it wasn’t for the arrival of my son, I could have spent months and months ‘perfecting’ The Essential Bag Company’s initial offering. But, the best way to learn in business, is to get feedback from customers and learn about what they like and don’t like.
4)Where’s your favourite place?
Parson’s Green, London, where I live. There is a great community and I am lucky to have made wonderful friends in the area so it is the perfect place for me to enjoy my (limited) spare time! I couldn’t fail to mention that I met my husband on Parsons Green 9 years ago so the area will always mean something extra special to me.
5)What’s your ideal weekend?
My ideal weekend would consist of Saturday spent with my family – a trip to a local park with the children, lunch at my favourite local Italian restaurant and a night out with my husband and friends. Sunday be a girls shopping trip and afternoon tea!
